HURRICANE KATRINA MEMORIAL GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

· Guests: Mayor Ray Nagin, Gen. Russel Honore, U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, state Rep. Juan LaFonta, the Rev. Stephen John Thurston, president of the National Baptist Convention of America, and Irvin Mayfield Jr.

STORIES FROM THOSE ASSISTED BY NOFD DURING KATRINA
· Time: 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
· Location: The Historic New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal Street
· Description: THNOC and the New Orleans Fire Department will be collecting the oral histories of individuals who were aided by the NOFD during and immediately following Hurricane Katrina. The interviews will be part of the ongoing after-action study of the NOFD’s response during Katrina and will be used to improve planning and procedures. Once recorded, the oral histories will be housed within The Historic New Orleans Collection for the benefit of future generations.

CEREMONIAL BELL RINGING AND WREATH LAYING
· Time: 9:38 a.m
· Place: Katrina Memorial Site, Canal Street / City Park Cemetery @ Head of Canal Street
· Description: Mayor Nagin and Mrs. Nagin will be joined by local, state and national elected officials, community leaders, and citizens at 9:38 a.m. at the Katrina Memorial Site to ring ceremonial bells signifying the series of levee breaches that occurred throughout the city. Bells will ring for two minutes. (9:38 a.m. – 9:40 a.m.) Simultaneously, members of the New Orleans City Council will lay wreaths on levees throughout the city.
· Note: One New Orleans Mass Choir will sing prior to the bell ringing

· Description: This collaborative, educational effort strives to collect the untold stories of New Orleans residents by chronicling and preserving photographs, videos, family histories, interviews and other artifacts in an accessible and public digital archive. The project receives additional support from George Mason University’s Center for History and New Media and an array of both local and national partners. The archive and website are being given to The Collection to ensure that the process of collecting continues

FLEEING KATRINA-INSPIRING JOURNEYS OF SURVIVAL

· Description: Fleeing Katrina -Inspiring Journeys of Survival is a monologue play based on factual evacuation experiences and reminds us that along with the wreckage and harsh realities the storm left behind there is also hope and humanity to be salvaged.

NEW ORLEANS PREMIERE OF KAMP KATRINA
· Time: 8:15p.m.
· Location: Fair Grinds, 3133 Ponce de Leon
· Description: This documentary features Ms. Pearl – a New Orleans native, who converts her backyard into a tent city where 14 displaced people live for 6 months. She provides construction jobs and basic resources to help them assist in rebuilding the city. The situation gradually goes violently awry and she is confronted with an array of abuses amidst a broken city. As personal problems are exacerbated by the absence of basic infrastructure, Ms. Pearl is forced to wear as many hats as she does costumes. The film has won several awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Independent Film Festival of Boston.
