Those Italians are so darn clever. According to an article in Treehugger, blueberries are being used to replace silicon to harvest solar light into energy in Italy. The result is a much cheaper and more environmentally sensitive product. The only downside is the current yield from the blueberry cells is less efficient than silicon. However, “The blueberry pigment can also be mixed with an inorganic compound that ups the efficiency to 10%, which would bring the technology close to the current cost per watt of silicon solar cells.” The first implementation is set for 2008.
