Idea Blob

We like ideas, so it’s natural we’d like the beta site Idea Blob. The name sounds goopy, but the idea’s sticky. Here it is in the words of the Blob its self.

Great ideas are generated every day by people all across the country, and now these ideas have a place to live and grow. Eligible individuals can submit their business idea to ideablob.com, and based on votes from the ideablob.com online community – which includes other innovators as well as friends, family, colleagues, associates, teachers and mentors – one idea every month will win $10,000.

Not too shabby. You can also offer comments on ideas and help answer questions from budding entrepreneurs.

The site’s “inspired by” Advanta, a credit card company for small businesses started in 1951 by Jack Alter (then a Philadelphia schoolteacher) with an extra bedroom, less than $100 and the goal of offering hard to find funding to other teachers. It’s now one of the nation’s largest credit card issuers (through Advanta Bank Corp.) in the small business market.

And it’s bringing you and your ideas funding—anything from a program to teach students how to build Facebook apps or responsible consumerist brand for the developing world (finalists for December vote) to an odor eliminating shoe insert (not all ideas are world changing).

Check it out. Who knows, maybe alldaybuffet will be up there soon—if you think it’s a good idea.

One of the cool things about the site is that nonprofits and small businesses are using the contest as a reason to reach out and promote their ideas to their customer base as well as to ’sympathetic’ bloggers and other outlets. In particular, this has been working very well for nonprofits.
