Taking a dance class in the New York City area can easily cost you $15, but on February 17, from 12-1:30pm, it will cost you $0. Whether you’re a trained professional or a self-taught shaker, come down to the Joan Weill Center for Dance, otherwise known as the Ailey School, for a free Hawkins-based Modern class. Erick Hawkins (1909-1994) studied with the great George Balanchine before veering into modern dance with Martha Graham, who later became his wife and then divorcee. A Harvard graduate, Hawkins developed his own dance technique that was inspired by kinesthetic awareness. So if you enjoy moving freely and naturally, please RSVP to deejmurph@gmail.com and let your own movement take you through three-dimensional space. No slim-fit jeans, please.
