In case you hadn’t heard, Mother Jones recently released a playlist of music used by US troops while interrogating detainees.
Music has been used in American military prisons and on bases to induce sleep deprivation, “prolong capture shock,” disorient detainees during interrogations—and also drown out screams. Based on a leaked interrogation log, news reports, and the accounts of soldiers and detainees, here are some of the songs that guards and interrogators chose.
The list is disgustingly ironic with titles like Born in the U.S.A and Stayin’ Alive, but also less obvious digs like the commercial jingle for Meow Mix and the TV theme songs to Barney and Sesame Street. I doubt the prisoners get the joke.
