See Bob. See Bob run The South Side Gallery & Book Fair. ADBer Bob Berens is organizing the community event this weekend that’s bringing FREE, NEW books to the school-aged (K-8th) children of Williamsburg and Bushwick.
Books are not the most out-of-reach or in-demand luxury items for neighborhood kids. Maybe an X-Box 360 (600$) or a pair of limited edition sneakers (150$ or so) would fit that bill… But the pleasure and luxury of book ownership– keeping it by one’s bed, putting it up on a shelf or on top of one’s dresser as a badge of honor – ‘I read that’ – is a rich and rewarding stage in the development of any lifelong reader.
That’s where our book fair steps in: a one-day event for kids and their parents to browse from and freely choose high quality books to take home: picture books for the early readers, young reader paperbacks, YA novels, classics, etc.
They’re collecting unused paperbacks for the event, so if you want to donate some books, know any publishers who want to make book donations, or YA or childrens book author dying to offload excess author copies, hook it up! You can either bring your light load to the event, or Bob will arrange a door-to-door pickup for large quantities of books within the tri-state area. (If you’re willing to pay for express 1-2 day deliver at this point or just don’t know what book you should get for a YA, there’s a pretty great list here).
And if you want to help out, they need volunteers for the Book Fair too to help set up the books and work out the system on Friday from 2-8PM, and (even more importantly) people to help oversee the distribution of books and the book tables on Saturday between 10AM-4PM.

I just wanted to pipe in with an acknowledgment of the great people at El Puente — Rosa Piedra and Theresa Doherty in particular. El Puente is the host organization and event sponsor…not to mention the event’s promoters, flier designers, co-coordinators, and pretty much everything else.
Seriously, you should see the flier I designed for the event before El Puente put their creative muscle behind it. Let’s just say it was pretty weak stuff compared to what they came up with.
