Imagine a sport where six players gather together in a circle and keep a rattan ball aloft with various dance like kicks.
Imagine a sport where there is no opposing team, but it is still played with intense passion and vigor.
Imagine a sport where men and women, adults and children play on the same team.
Imagine a sport where participants achieve a state of zen during play.
Imagine a sport where the only objective is to play as beautifully as possible.
No need to imagine, that sport is Chinlone, and it is the traditional sport of Burma (Myanmar) that has been around for 1,500 years. The artistry, inclusiveness and sense of community that is embodied in this game are some of the reasons Burma holds a special place in our hearts. For some time Burma has faced difficulties under military rule, and those problems have recently been compounded with the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis. Chinlone is just one shining example of the spirit and optimism that the Burmese need right now.
