The Feast: Dickson Despommier

“What if “eating local” in Shanghai or New York meant getting your fresh produce from five blocks away? And what if skyscrapers grew off the grid, as verdant, self-sustaining towers where city slickers cultivated their own food?” - New York Times

We’re excited that Dickson Despommier (professor at Columbia University) will be speaking at The Feast Conference.  If you don’t know already, Dickson is one of the masterminds behind Vertical Farming: a theoretical construct to look at the possibility of agricultural within cities.

“The idea grew out of a class project to measure the effects of rooftop gardening in New York City on reducing the dome of heat that develops over us each year.  From that original idea, I expanded the concept to include urban agriculture and finally to multi-story indoor farming.”

Dickson will talk about Vertical Farming at The Feast.  Specifically:

“Food crops can be grown to commercial levels indoors. We propose to create tall buildings within the urban landscape for that purpose. Most vegetables, grains and many fruits, herbs and spices can be grown indoors. Poultry, fish, mollusks, and crustaceans can also be farmed indoors. In doing so, land can then be returned to nature, allowing for the sequestration of carbon in the form of hardwood trees.”
