We showed a handful of hand selected videos and performances at he conference last week to get people’s creative juices going. But as exemplars of creativity for good through various media and mediums, we thought we’d share and get your thoughts. Here’s how it went down.
We’ve posted this piece before, but our friends over at M ss ng p eces did such a beautiful job of video storytelling, we thought we had to share. The true story of how William Kamkwamba of Malawi figured out how to make windmills on his own, it’s only the beginning of the ingenuity to come out of Africa. William’s and attendee of the African Leadership Academy (a program supported by our partners over at Echoing Green).
A complement to Robbie Vitrano’s inspiring talk about New Orleans as the social innovation laboratory, Idea Village created this video about their 504 Ward initiative and its $100,000 prize for ideas to make New Orleans the talent magnet of the world.
504ward Promotional Film from Benjamin Reece on Vimeo.
An amazing TV spot for an amazing program created by the Nike foundation and Wieden + Kennedy, it’s called The Girl Effect. Definition, n. The powerful Social and economic change brought about when girls have the opportunity to participate in their society.
The day also included an amazing dance performance by dancer, choreographer Kyle Abraham accompanied by live viola to a recording of the song “Reversible”. The inspiration for an initiative called Project Reversible, the song is part of a larger collaborative effort by amazing artists to raise funds for organizations currently fighting against racism, homophobia, and suicide with the goal of inspiring change by asking and answering this question “What will you reverse?”
And in an attempt to span all genres, we treated the audience to a dose of social hip hop with a screening of Emmanuel Jal’s music video, War Child, sharing a message of peace and reconciliation born out of Emmanuel’s experiences as a child soldier in Sudan.
