A palm filled roof, hot summer night air and glistening bodies doesn’t sound like the typical charity event, but that was the scene at MGIH last night. Thank you to the 250-300 of you came out in the heat to help our 3 amazing nonprofits – South Sustainable South Bronx, City Year, and StartingBloc – there were some great ideas, contacts made and awareness raised.

We’ll be following up shortly with each group on how ride the wave of energy and action from the night. KIT

Tonight’s the big night to Make Good Ideas Happen and it’s gonna be the Jam. We’ve already got a bunch of ideas on how to help these nonprofits that make us say “wouldn’t it be sweet if”: we could set up a creative competition for StartingBloc? Get together a branding campaign for Sustainable South Bronx? Do a PR campaign on how City Year graduates make better employees?

But that’s just the start. We can’t wait to hear your ideas and most importantly, what’s next on the to-do list, who’s down to help and where the launch parties are gonna be!

ADB and Behance are big fans of the work and ideas that have come from Sustinable South Bronx. Talk about using innovation to break the rules and expectations, they’ve put the Bronx on the Green map, destroying the notion of trickle down “elitist” environmentalism. So we’re extremely excited that they’ll be creating a new consultancy to take their methods on Greening the Ghetto national, and will be presenting (and asking for your thoughts on) the initiative at Make Good Ideas Happen.

Their mission:

Environmental Justice through innovative, economically sustainable projects that are informed by community needs.

Founded in 2001 by life-long South Bronx resident, Dr. Majora Carter, SSBx also addresses land-use, energy, transportation, water & waste policy, and education to advance the environmental and economic rebirth of the South Bronx, and inspire solutions in areas like it across the nation and around the world.

What they do:

Everything from Green Roof Installation to the Bronx Greenway project, even Green Collar Job Training. A small locally based non-profit environmental justice solutions corporation that has an international reputation for innovation and foresight.

What they will be presenting

Bronx Takeover-Creating a New Initiative and Consultancy to Green the Nation’s Ghettos.

Being a small org with a big rep has made it hard for SSBx to find funding. So founder, Dr. Majora Carter, is launching a private consulting firm that will guide municipalities, educational institutions, foundations, and other communities towards a path that unlocks their own green-collar potential in ways that benefit everyone. A near blank slate, come help SSBX determine what the new face of urban sustainability and justice will look like.

This consultancy will offer survey tools and services for government, community, and corporate leaders to get a clear picture of their assets and deficits, and then ongoing reporting and advice that will bridge those gaps and shine a light to a sustainable future.

We’ve been talking a lot about “Make Good Ideas Happen” because we’re excited about the potential of all the amazing people and ideas that will be there. But more than that, we’re excited about making these ideas a reality. While we at ADB are helping with the vision, Behance is behind the action.

For those of you who’ve been seeing them around, but never raised your hands to ask what they are, Behance is a company that designs products and services that empower the creative world to make ideas happen. This includes a method for productivity developed through research with thousands of productive creatives called the “Action Method”, products that help you enact this method in your daily life, an online magazine which publishes tips and continued interviews with top creatives, and a network where creative professionals can share their work, critique each other, and develop circles of people to follow and collaborate with.

We’ll be using their products and method on Monday night at MGIH, so we figured we’d give you a run down of how it works.

The success of any idea ultimately comes down to action. Our method is a discipline for everyday productivity.

Designed for those with many ideas and lots of creative energy, the Action Method seeks to simplify project management and life.

The typical creative process for managing ideas and projects is haphazard. Many creatives lose energy amidst unclear tasks, half-finished thoughts, ideas with ambiguous next steps, cluttered references, and little follow-up in a team environment. This method brings order to the organic creative process we all use in our work.
The Action Method is project-centric, not context-centric. We found that creative people tend to approach their personal and professional lives as a series of projects. Design helps us sort the components of these projects and stay engaged long enough to complete them.
In the Action Method, the outcome of every idea or interaction must be captured and transformed into action steps, backburner items, and reference items. Our research reveals that most productive creative professionals and teams identify and manage with these three components as a routine part of their creative process. While everyone should develop his or her own system for adopting the Action Method, the Behance Team proposes the following rhythm:

Action Method Principles

1.Capture Action Steps, Relentlessly

During a brainstorm, meeting, or on the run, ideas arrive in a flurry of other activity and can be lost unless they are captured and transformed into action steps. Action steps point to tasks to be completed. Each action step should start with a verb (ie.: follow up with x, review y, meet with z).

2. Tend to Your Backburner

Keep a “backburner” to catch ideas that may someday require actions, or just to clear your mind of the little and non-urgent things. Preserve your creative energy and focus on action steps!

3. File Reference Items, Sparingly

Keep only the notes, articles and sketches, that you need. Avoid clutter.

Polls show that while confidence in our democracy and our government is near an all-time low, volunteerism and civic participation since the ´70s are near all-time highs. Why? Because people, especially young people, think the government and the public sphere are broken, but they feel they can personally make a difference through community service (hell, that’s why ADB’s around). Internet Week is upon us and we’re RSVPing and google calendaring like good attendees should. NET AESTHETICS 2.0

An Evening at Maker Fair

An Evening at Maker Faire will bring together dozens of NY makers to exhibit their creative projects for one fun and festive evening. On display will be cutting-edge DIY projects based around robotics, electronics, new music, alternative crafts, and interactive art. Joining the editors of Make and Craft Magazine will be the Institute for the Future, who will present their map of the Future of Making, and their forecasts about the impact of “Making” on our daily lives.

OUT WITH THE OLD

Hungry Man, Hungry Man TV, and The Circuit will join forces to host OUT WITH THE OLD. This incredible gathering will bring together executives from the Advertising, New Media and Entertainment fields for a fun filled celebration of “old media.” The night will feature special guests, prizes, and classic must have hardware as attendees are asked to bring obsolete cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, pagers, and other wireless electronics for donation to Recycling for Charity, a non-profit organization set up to protect the Earth’s environment while helping other charities, such as The Halo Foundation.

MEDIA MESHING

Media Meshing is a monthly afterwork bar night bringing New York media types together. Think of it as “real life” social networking. Anyone involved in media is invited, old or new, print or web, etc. Actual media meshing is described simply as using an independent piece of media, such as a blog or a website, to enhance the experience of another piece. This is just like that, except with people and alcohol.

ADB and Behance are pumped about Make Good Ideas Happen, not just because it’ll be a GOOD time, but because of participating groups like StartingBloc, which empowers its network to drive social change in communities and organizations around the globe.

The two ladies at the helm of the organization are alumn of the StartingBloc program: Taryn who used to work on her parents’ food distribution business (which used to be her grandparents’ turkey farm)…”I love great food!” and Jo, a “gooder/rockstar” who played goalie for the Kenyan National Field Hockey Team.
