It’s backkkkk!  Yes, we’re in the sunny city of San Diego this month..

Cause for Drinks is a series of bi-monthly happy hour hosted by alldaybuffet in cities across the country. It’s a pretty simple idea. People in each city gather for happy hour at their local watering hole and $2 from every drink goes to a selected charity. We’ve raised over $10,000 in a couple of months. That’s almost 5,000 drinks consumed. Excited yet? Check out our past Cause for Drinks to see how we get down.

Holiday Matinee will be the host on Thursday, November 6th at Whistle Stop Bar from 5 – 8 PM.  Two dollars from every drink will be donated to an awesome charity started by the late singer John Denver called Plant-It 2020, which helps plant, maintain and protect trees worldwide.

Put on your thick rimmed glasses and pull up your socks. Our September Cause for Drinks is tonight!  It’s the last one for a while so if you’ve never been or plan on coming to the next one, this may be your last chance! So come out and support some amazing educational nonprofits like 826 Chicago and 826 Seattle (Started in San Fran by Dave Eggers, the nonprofits are housed behind front stores that carry everything from Spy Supplies to Space gear!) And from sea to shining sea, we’re representing San Francisco School Volunteers the largest source of volunteers for San Francisco public schools and, in NYC, our friends at Starting Bloc who run the Social innovation Institute.

So hop on the big yellow bus, bring your composition books and grab a drink.. your Halloween costume planning can wait for just one night.

The weather is changing, leaves are turning and it’s back to school time at alldaybuffet. JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes is an adventure of a lifetime. Riders from around the world take on two challenges: raising the critical money needed to fund the research that will cure diabetes, and reaching a personal training goal that will prepare them for their destination cycling experience.

Want to do something to change the world in DC? Political ambitions are great, but you could also just grab a drink (might be more direct anyway). Our first DC Cause for Drinks is benefiting an amazing nonprofit called Women for Women International.

Why?

“In today’s wars, 90 percent of casualties are civilians, 75 percent of whom are women and children; a century ago, 90 percent of war casualties were male soldiers.”

Since it’s creation , Women for Women International has empowered over 153,000 women survivors of war to move toward economic self-sufficiency with a year-long program of direct aid, rights education, job skills training and small business development.  They’ve distributed $42 million in direct aid, microcredit loans, and other program services.  Since 1993, Women for Women International has mobilized more than 125,000 women and men in 105 countries worldwide to reach out and support women survivors of war – one woman at a time.

Condi’s push for the UN security council to declare rape a war crime means our gov’t is actually working on it (better late than never), but there’s a mess that same government left behind that we can help clean up (read following Angelina and Brad’s move to donate to the WFW’s programs in Iraq). We look forward to raising a glass to personally help women in war torn countries around the world.

$2 from every drink will go to support THE JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION and on top of that, family. Cause for Drinks will be supporting two of the hundreds of riders in this JDRF’s August Ride to Cure Diabetes, Nick and his mother Debbie, who will be at the event with their brother and son, who suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

“Many people think type 1 diabetes can be controlled by insulin. While insulin does keep people with type 1 diabetes alive, it is NOT a cure. Aside from the daily challenges of living with type 1 diabetes, there are many severe, often fatal, complications caused by the disease. That’s the bad news… and yes, it’s pretty bad. The good news, though, is that a cure for type 1 diabetes is within reach. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research to date. And JDRF funds a major portion of all type 1 diabetes research worldwide, more than any other charity.”

We’re suckers for pups and Rocket Dog Rescue’s got us up to our ears in them.

A volunteer based organization serving the greater Bay Area, Rocket Dog Rescue is dedicated to saving homeless and abandoned dogs from over crowded animal shelters.

Non-aggressive dogs are place into temporary foster homes where they are socialized, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and treated for any medical or behavioral conditions limiting their adoptability. RDR then actively seek out permanent quality homes for these deserving animals through its volunteer network, online adoption page, weekend adoption fairs, and neighborhood poster campaigns.

The inspiration for the organization: the founder’s dog Leadbelly.

Pali Boucher, a San Francisco native and recipient of a 2001 Points of Light Award for outstanding volunteerism, was once once homeless and facing problems with addiction until the fateful hound dog came into her life.

“I narrowly dodged the bullet of losing my dog so many times that it just stressed me out too much, man. I had to make some changes. So I went into a drug program. While I was in recovery, Leadbelly stayed with a friend of mine. More than a year later, my subsidized housing came through, I was clean and sober and I got him back…

A year ago—just after Leadbelly died—I wanted to go the next step and create my own nonprofit. My core group of about 10 friends became my board of directors and volunteers. RocketDog Rescue is a tribute to Leadbelly. He helped me learn how to take care of myself by taking care of him.“

They’ve already saved over 150 dogs this year–how?

“none of us are ever paid. . . . We pay for spaying and neutering, vaccinations. Usually we do a lot more medically, or for dental work, than we should. I just had a dog come out of ear surgery. I took another dog to an eye specialist yesterday. What I do is sit out with a jar in the Castro or Noe Valley and collect money. I’m proud to do that.”

We’re pumped to be supporting Rocket Dogs through our San Fran Cause For Drinks on July 16th. We’ll be teaming up with Good Magazine and Planning for Good on the event. So if you’re in the bay area, stop by, grab a drink, and help support a great cause and some great dogs.

What’s new up in these parts? CFD’s coming to Boston thanks to our partners at Street Attack. An alternative-marketing agency they’ve got a serious social bent (just check out their links page). They know their traditional and nontraditional marketing, and when turned toward good causes means everything from launching the best green rating site on the web IzzitGreen.com to building biodeisle buses.
